Minn. Researchers To Survey Homeless Population

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) ― More than 800 volunteers will spread out across Minnesota on Thursday to survey the state's homeless population.

The research by a branch of the St. Paul-based Amherst H. Wilder Foundation is the definitive study of homelessness in Minnesota. It's done every three years.

This year's study will show the effects of the recession for the first time. Interviewers will visit more than 300 shelters. Their findings will be released next spring.

Wilder's 2006 survey found an estimated 9,200 homeless people in Minnesota, with more than half suffering from serious mental illness and a third struggling with substance abuse.
