Minneapolis Girl Injured By Pool Drain Dies

MINNEAPOLIS (CBS) ―

A Minneapolis girl whose injury from a pool drain led to new federal pool safety legislation, died Thursday night, according to a Minnesota senator's office.

Abigail Taylor, 6, had part of her intestinal tract torn out by a drain's powerful suction at a wading pool in July 2007, reports CBS station WCCO-TV in Minneapolis.

Her injury led to federal legislation to make pools safer.

She received a small bowel, liver and pancreas transplant in December.

Since the injury, Taylor has been in and out of the hospital, and has had to get her nourishment through an intravenous tube. The surgery was supposed to help her eat like a normal kid again.

Bob Bennett, an attorney for the Taylor family, said Abigail's parents were with her when she died at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where she received her transplants.

She later suffered setbacks, including a cancerous condition sometimes triggered by organ transplants.

It's not clear at this time what caused her death.
