New Rose To Honor Heroes Of Sept. 11 Attacks

When the "Forty Heroes" rose was presented to families of the terrorist attacks, they were overwhelmed.

A Minnesota nursery has helped to develop a special variety that holds a beautiful meaning. It's called the "Forty Heroes" rose and the special blooms will be included in a memorial garden to honor the crew and passengers of United Flight 93, one of the planes that went down on Sept. 11.
"One of the mothers said that looking at the rose would be like looking into the face of her child," said Peggy Anne Montgomery of Bailey's Nurseries.
Montgomery said when the "Forty Heroes" rose was presented to families of the terrorist attacks, they were overwhelmed. Bailey's Nurseries worked with an Oregon horticulturist to develop the flower that holds a special meaning.
"There is a language of color with roses and with all flowers, and yellow is peace and yellow is friendship," said Montgomery.
One of the 40 passengers and crew who died on United Flight 93 was Bloomington-native Tom Burnett. He helped lead the assault on the terrorists, so the plane crashed into a Pennsylvania field, instead of reaching its intended target in Washington, D.C.
"You know I think we were all affected by 9/11 and it's just a way to honor the heroes that were on those flights that day. And just look at how strong we are as a country and as a nation," said Montgomery.
Now those heroes have a lovely and long-lasting tribute. The Forty Heroes roses will go on sale this summer. The roses will be included in the garden in Pennsylvania, as well as gardens in New York City and Washington, D.C. in honor of the 9/11 victims.
