Guard Killed In Miami-Area Armored Car Robbery

Gunmen Spotted Running Through Mall With Bag Of Cash

MIAMI (CBS) ― Miami-Dade police are searching for two gunmen who repeatedly shot and killed an armored truck guard at a Miami area mall Monday morning.

Two gunmen were reportedly on the loose, and an armored truck guard was the person shot, Miami-Dade police spokesman Det. Alvaro Zabaleta told WFOR-CBS4. Miami police wouldn't immediately comment on the report to The Associated Press.

A Dunbar armored car parked in front of the mall was surrounded by police and fire rescue officials.

According to Miami-Dade police spokesman Det. Alvaro Zabaleta, two gunmen remain on the loose after shooting a Dunbar armored truck guard around 11:15 a.m. inside the Express clothing store at Dadeland Mall located on North Kendall Drive between US 1 and the 826 Palmetto Expressway.

The guard was airlifted to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital in critical condition. He died several hours later.

Witnesses said they heard numerous gunshots and described shoppers screaming and running through the Dadeland Mall.

Jennie Block, 59, was shopping for clothes when she said she heard about 10 gunshots from a nearby store. "There was screaming and yelling and chaos," she said.

Another shopper, Jorge Divo, was having coffee in the food court when he saw a crowd of shoppers running, screaming "that someone had been shot."

A group that owns the mall said in a statement that stores were open except in the area near the shooting.

"We are shocked and saddened by this tragic crime," Lydia Gilmore of the Simon Property Group said in the statement. "Our hearts and prayers go out to the victim."

The Dadeland Mall is located about 15 miles southwest of downtown Miami. It has more than 185 specialty stores, department stores, shops and boutiques.
