Deportations Up In Region That Includes Minn.
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ―
U.S. Immigration Customs Enforcement officials are reporting record numbers of deportations of illegal immigrants in a five-state region that includes Minnesota.
A Bloomington, Minn., field office of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement oversees Minnesota, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota. It deported more than 4,900 illegal immigrants in fiscal year 2008. The figures from year ended Sept. 30 are up 20 percent from 4,100 last year.
About 2,100 of those returned to their native countries in 2008 had prior criminal convictions.
