Strong Earthquake Shakes Chile

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) ― The U.S. Geological Survey says a strong, 6.3-magnitude earthquake has rattled Chile's coast near the city of Valparaiso.

Carmen Fernandez of Chile's Emergency Bureau says there are no immediate reports of major damage or injuries.

The USGS is reporting that the quake struck at 6:19 p.m. local time (21:19 GMT) Thursday, about 45 miles (70 kilometers) north of Valparaiso. It was followed a half-hour later by a 5.8-magnitude aftershock.

USGS geophysicist John Bellini called it a strong quake but said it "would not be expected to cause large, widespread damage."
