Jefferson County Sheriff Ted Mink has told the survivors of Columbine and their families that he will make his decision soon on whether to release some evidence that has been suppressed.
The Denver Post said Mink wrote them on Thursday to say the decision would come soon. He gave no hint of whether he would release all or part of the records or none of them.
Attention this will week focus on the groundbreaking for a memorial to the 13 victims. Former President Bill Clinton is to attend the Friday event, the second time he has come to Colorado to raise money for the memorial.
Among the materials yet to be publicly released are the so- called "basement tapes" made by killers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold in which they brandish weapons and boast about their upcoming rampage at Columbine High School.
The suppressed evidence includes audiotapes, writings, diaries and notations in school yearbooks made by Klebold and Harris. It also includes notes written by Harris' father, Wayne, about juvenile crimes committed by the two teenagers a year earlier as well as medical records for Harris and Klebold.
Video tapes made by two killers also are included.
The Denver Post has fought in court for the release of all the material, saying it is evidence in a crime.
