Officials will check boats at three popular Minnesota lakes starting Memorial Day weekend in an effort to prevent the spread of zebra mussels.
The state Department of Natural Resources is teaming up with law enforcement agencies to check boats at Lake Mille Lacs, Prior Lake in Scott County and Rice Lake near Brainerd.
The DNR wants boaters to "Pull the Plug" on aquatic hitchhikers such as zebra mussels.
Lake Mille Lacs and Rice Lake have an increasing zebra mussel population. Last month zebra mussels were discovered in Prior Lake. Officials fear boaters could inadvertently spread zebra mussels to other lakes and rivers.
Officials will check boats and inform boaters to inspect, remove and drain water from bait buckets, live wells and boats before leaving. Violators face up to $500 fines.
