Wounded Deputy Transferred Out Of Critical Care

FARGO, N.D. (WCCO) ― The condition of a Mahnomen County sheriff's deputy critically wounded in a shooting continues to improve.

MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D., said Sunday that 26-year-old Deputy Christopher Dewey was transferred out of MeritCare Hospital's critical care unit into a surgical unit. He remains in guarded condition.

In a news release, critical care specialist Dr. Frank Sepe said "Chris has made significant improvements in the last 48 hours and is now well enough to move from the critical care unit."

On Saturday, Sepe said Dewey was moving his left side and consistently following commands. He had been able to move his right side all along.

"Chris is now out of immediate danger and has done great so far, but he will undergo more surgery and there's still a long road ahead for he and his family because of the injury to his brain," Surgeon Dr. Robert Sticca said in a news release on Sunday.

Dewey was shot in the head and the abdomen Wednesday morning while checking a report of shots fired in a neighborhood in Mahnomen. A backup deputy found Dewey lying in the driveway.

Two Twin Cities-area men face multiple charges. They surrendered after a nine-hour standoff at a mobile home.
