A woman dies a month after a car crash, and the baby emergency crews delivered minutes after that crash is still fighting to live.
Jamie Baer, 22, of Crystal died Monday several weeks after the Ford Mustang her friend was driving rolled on Interstate 94 east of Highway 101.
Her family wants others to learn from their loss. Jamie's mother and sister say they are numb to their new reality of a life without Jamie. Her mother said it will never be the same.
"The three of us are as close bonded as could be. It's left us empty, broken-hearted and a big hole," Kari Palashewski said.
It was Aug. 22 when Jamie was out with two friends. She was buckled in the back seat. Police say the driver made a choice to drink and then drive more than 100 miles an hour before the Ford Mustang plowed into an interstate ditch.
Jamie was six months pregnant when she was pulled from that car. Her baby was delivered at Hennepin County Medical Center after the crash weighing 1 pound, 12 ounces. She was named Angel.
"It was a family decision (to name her that) because she's kind of a miracle," Jamie's mother said.
Still on a respirator, Angel never got to meet her mother. She now weighs more than two pounds.
Jamie's family denies initial reports their daughter was drinking that night, but whatever happened their wish is that no other family ever feels the pain caused by the decision to drink and drive.
"It devastates lives, many lives," Kari Palashewski said.
The Minnesota State Patrol will complete its investigation into the crash and turn it over to the county attorney's office who will decide what charges to file against the driver, 21-year-old Frank Tregoning. Another passenger, Kelsey Palmer, suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Jamie's family has set up a trust to help pay for Angel's medical expenses. Donations can be made to the
Jamie Baer Trust Benefit Account at any
Wells Fargo Bank.
