A longtime coach and teacher at Woodbury High School was memorialized after he died Wednesday morning.
Wayne Dietz was a math teacher as well as coach for the school baseball team. He was the longest-serving teacher at the school and was set to retire at the end of the current school year.
"I found him to be one of the most generous, kind, basically happy people that I've ever met" said Woodbury principal Linda Plante.
"He's given Woodbury his whole life. He loves Woodbury," said baseball player Tony Pittman.
Dietz died while riding his bicycle. A memorial service is planned for Monday night at the high school, but in the meantime, the coach's life was honored at Wednesday night's football game.
On Wednesday evening, Dietz was memorialized just across the field from where he spent years coaching. The football field and surrounding stands took a moment out of their game for a moment of silence.
"Today, the kids themselves decided to have a moment of silence. They texted each other between the two periods," said John Soma. "Two-thousand kids are walking the hall; not one word was said the entire day. I've never seen that at a high school, and that just kind of speaks to what Wayne meant to this school and community."
"It's been pretty tough in the back of our minds, trying to focus on the game," said Mike Seidel, who played baseball for Dietz and was found in his football uniform Wednesday evening. "This game is for Dietz. It's been kind of hard, but we're going to get it done for him."
Woodbury won their game against Stillwater by 48-7.
