Police: Would-Be Car Thief Hits Victim With Hammer

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (WCCO) ― A man is in the Sherburne County Jail and awaiting possible theft, assault and drug charges Friday, according to St. Cloud police.

Officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of 7th Street Southeast after 6 a.m. Friday when a woman called to report seeing a man shouting for help as he chased another man.

Police believe 24-year-old Robert Adam Derosier of Sauk Rapids had been trying to steal a vehicle parked on the 700 block of 13th Avenue Southeast, when the vehicle's owner spotted and chased him. When the owner caught up with Derosier, Derosier hit him with a hammer, according to the report.

Police said when they arrested Derosier, they found an unknown prescription pill and money stolen from the victim's vehicle.

The victim was taken to the St. Cloud Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
