Uptick In Vehicle Break-Ins As Economy Slumps

(WCCO) Cars break-ins are one crime that always goes up when people are out in warm weather.

Police in Savage, Minn., are looking for a man and woman who they say stole at least one purse and used a stolen credit card at a store.

Police are looking for the two, who were captured by surveillance tape, for recent car break-ins at Lifetime Fitness health club parking lot. Police also think the couple is involved in other crimes.

As police search for the two suspects, other areas throughout the metro area are also seeing an increase in thefts from autos.

Many times, the victims left their valuables on display in unlocked cars.

"Take steps to put (valuables) undercover before you arrive at your retail destination ... put that stuff in the trunk before you leave the office," said Jason Thunstrom, a Lifetime Fitness's spokesman.

Lifetime Fitness officials said they have worked closely with law enforcement to help track down the criminals and to provide crime prevention education for their customers so they don't become victims

"Some people are willing to break the law and prey on unsuspecting people," said Thunstrom.

Retail parking lots and ramps are always magnets for thieves. Parks are also popular targets for thieves, especially near areas where drivers leave their cars to go for a long walk or run.
