Uptown Sees A Rash Of Vehicle Break-Ins

MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) ― A warning is out Tuesday night for people who live or visit the Uptown area. There have been nearly 100 car break-ins in the last two weeks with valuables inside stolen.

Many of the thefts happened inside secured underground parking garages.

"We had woken up one morning and a bunch of the homeowners found the cars broken into. It's primarily just the cars in the garage," said Condos at Lake Calhoun resident Jeff Recker.

Investigators said someone pried open the side door of the Condos at Lake Calhoun complex and headed straight for the garage.

"All of the windows on the driver side were smashed. They were either looking for GPSs or CDs or whatever other valuables that were in there," said Recker.

Nine cars were broken into inside the garage.

"It is disconcerting. We paid extra for the garage spot instead of the spot up top and unfortunately that's where most of the break-ins have occurred," said Recker.

It is just a handful of the recent rash of car thefts hitting neighborhoods around the lakes.

"Over the last couple of weeks we've experienced a significant spike," said Minneapolis Police 5th Precinct Inspector Eddie Frizell. "Its been unseasonably warm along with a holiday season that is fast approaching us. We wanted to make sure we get the message out."

The robbers often wait until garage doors open before slipping in unnoticed.

Police are recommending that secure underground parking garage users be aware of everything and should make sure there is nobody behind them when they enter the garage. A precaution many do not think of.

"It's certainly not. You think it's a garage in your own building and it's safe," said Recker.

Police suggest taking GPS units laptops and other valuables out of cars that are even in garages. They also said to jot down serial numbers on electronics, which makes it easy for police to track and return.
