Morton County Considering Turbines

MANDAN, N.D. (AP) ― Morton County commissioners are considering Minnesota Power's request for a special use permit to put up 17 wind turbines

The company, based in Duluth, Minn., plans 33 turbines in south central North Dakota within the next two years. A permit application is pending for 16 others in Oliver County.

Jim Atkinson, a Minnesota Power environmental specialist, said energy from the turbines would be connected to a Minnkota Power Co. transmission line near Center. He said the area is one of the "best wind areas in North Dakota."

The state Public Service Commission has scheduled an Aug. 25 public hearing on the company's permit application.
