Trocaderos' Closing Forces Non-Profit To Scramble

(WCCO) Trocaderos' Web site brags, "We can make it happen." It appears the club's owners couldn't however -- the downtown event center has closed.

In business since 2005, Trocaderos was known as a place to dance, catch live music and get a decent meal.

Now the doors of the club are locked and the space is available for sale or lease.

Eric Rech got word last night from a Facebook friend, the club's manager.

The message read, "Trocaderos officially no longer exists."

Rech said, "I thought it was kidding, so I actually texted him and said, 'Is this for real?' And he came back with, 'Gone and done as of today.'"

Rech is the founder of Charity Warriors, a non-profit that raises money for other non-profits.

Charity Warriors was all set to host a fundraiser next Wednesday at Trocaderos. It was a benefit for Chimbote, a poor village in Peru.

Rech's non-profit had even put money down for the event.

"All together, I gave them a check for $400," said Rech.

He's upset that he found out about Trocaderos' closing through Facebook.

"We were not told," said Rech. "You don't wake up in the morning and say, 'Hey, I'm going to close down my million-dollar nightclub.'"

WCCO reached co-owner Ted Saxon at Saxon Ford in St. Paul and asked whether Charity Warriors would get their money back.

He said, "I don't have any comments right now ... I don't have any comments on anything."

Wednesday at Fairview Southdale Hospital, Tanya Velishek-Yzaguirre gave a presentation on life in Chimbote, Peru. She used to live there. She's led her Fairview South coworkers on mission trips to Chimbote.

Next Wednesday's fundraiser was going to benefit an October trip to the Peru.

Velishek-Yzaguirre told her audience about the children of Chimbote.

"They don't get breakfast, they might get lunch, but they won't get supper," she said.

Velishek-Yzaguirre won't let Trocaderos' closing derail her fundraising plans.

"It's for a reason. God has a purpose, that's where I'm going with it," she said with a laugh.

The organizers have already found a new location for their benefit, the Fine Line Music Café.

The rescheduled event will now be held on July 29.
