A father and son must pay a combined fine of $30,000 for illegally cutting down about 250 trees from the Chippewa National Forest.
Sixty-five-year-old Arvid C. Bourman and 37-year-old Arvid C. Bourman Jr. were sentenced Thursday. In addition to the fine, they each received two years probation and they are also banned from the forest for two years.
The Spring Lake pair pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of cutting, injuring and destroying basswood and birch trees in the forest.
According to the plea agreements, from November 2003 to October 2006, the Bourmans cut about 250 trees from the forest illegally. On Oct. 12, 2006, a Forest Service agent saw the Bourmans cutting down the trees and placing them onto a log loader.
An attorney for the Bourmans was in court Friday and did not immediately return to a phone message from The Associated Press seeking comment.
