DWI Enforcement Increased For Thanksgiving Eve
(WCCO)
Turkey should be the only thing travelers indulge in this Thanksgiving. Minnesota law enforcement will be stepping up DWI enforcement before the holiday to curb a historically dangerous night -- Thanksgiving Eve -- for impaired driving.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety is also stressing safe travel for the busy holiday weekend. In the last three years, there were 19 deaths during the Thanksgiving travel period, typically considered to be from Wednesday to Sunday.
Impaired driving and self belt use remains the primary concerns during the high-traffic time period. Of those 19 deaths, 10 were alcohol-related and more than half of the motorists were not wearing a seat belt.
More than 2,200 motorists were arrested for DWI in the last three years, during Thanksgiving travel times. Extra enforcement will be conducted in the Twin Cities and across the state, including DWI patrols and seat belt enforcement.
Minnesota's primary seat belt law requires drivers and all passengers to be buckled up or in the correct child restraint. A seat belt violation can cost more than $100.
