Teacher Dyes Hair Pink For Students' Fundraiser

AURORA, Minn. (AP) ― Kim Yuretich's students didn't meet the $5,000 fundraising goal for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital that would have guaranteed their teacher would show up with pink hair.

But they hit the halfway point, and Yuretich surprised everyone by showing up at school last month with pink-streaked hair -- a compromise she made after the students raised $2,600 for the research hospital based in Memphis, Tenn.

"They didn't think I'd go through with it," said Yuretich, who teaches math at Mesabi East High School in this town located about 60 miles north of Duluth.

Her seventh and ninth grade students -- along with some eighth graders not in her class -- competed in a math-a-thon and raised pledge money from relatives, friends and community members. About 35 students completed workbooks with 200 math problems to solve in addition to their regular homework.

Students not participating in the math-a-thon also donated money, along with a retired teacher who gave $100.

"I was overwhelmed by how much people came through," said Yuretich, who got the pink highlights done at a local salon for free.

Yuretich says she's gotten a few strange looks, including from her in-laws at Thanksgiving, but she said it's all worth it.

"(The students) usually don't get that jazzed up about math," Yuretich said. "They just ran with it. They worked so hard."
