New Foods, New Fee At Taste Of Minnesota

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ― The Taste of Minnesota has been a holiday tradition for 29 years. But this year, it's under different ownership and there are plenty of changes -- starting when you pay at the gate.

If you come through the gates before 3 p.m., it's free. After that time, you have to pay.

"You're paying $10 at the gate but you're getting back $10 in food and drink vouchers," said Andy Faris with the Taste of Minnesota.

There's plenty to buy with those tickets with eight new food booths this year.

Check out what Steffen's Brother's Meat from Albertville is serving up.

"It's a maple sausage ... We basically take that and dip it into pancake batter," said Ryan Smith with Steffens Brother's Meat.

"It comes out looking like a corn dog but taste completely different," he said. They call it the MSP (Maple Sausage Pancake).

You can wash it down with this a new Jolly Rancher drink.

"We have green apple, blue raspberry and watermelon," said Roger Lund with Lund distribution.

It's a childhood candy, liquefied.

"It tastes exactly like a Jolly Rancher. I was a little skeptical. It takes me back to when I was 6," said Becky Nowlin. "It's fabulous."

Willingham's BBQ has won three Twin Cities RibFest awards. Now they are hoping to win over folks at the Taste of Minnesota.

And they have something you've probably not tried -- a Wham Dog.

"We put the Wham seasoning on the hotdog ... and then we put that on a nice toasted bun, cover that with beef brisket that we smoke for 16 hours," said John Bigalk with Wellingham's BBQ. "Then we put a little bit of nacho cheese on it to make it really good."

You can dance off all that food while listening to bands on the main stage.

Rock group Throw the Fight started things off at noon. This year the stage is bigger and they've got some big names.

"Friday night is White Snake and Judas Priest -- obviously big headliners," said Faris.
