Students Expelled For Buying Swords On School Trip

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Two high school students from the Twin Cities area have been expelled after buying souvenir swords during a school trip to the United Kingdom.

The students from Apple Valley and Eagan high schools were on the spring break choir trip when a chaperone found duct-taped boxes that contained the swords.

They were confiscated, and school officials expelled them when they returned.

Brad Briggs said his 16-year-old son was the student expelled from Eagan High School. Briggs spoke out at a school board meeting and said the punishment didn't fit the crime. He says his son bought a $60 set of three samurai swords in York, England, and that there was no intent of violence.

Superintendent John Currie says the district uses its best judgment to keep students, staff and others safe.
