Hastings Police Shoot, Kill Sword-Wielding Man

HASTINGS, Minn. (WCCO) ― A Hastings police officer shot and killed a man who they said was armed with a long sword late Thursday night.

The shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. Police were called to the Express Lube building on reports a man was breaking windows on cars and buildings.

Officers found the Brandon Lee Rodriguez, 23, of Hastings at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton cemetery. Authorities said when Rodriguez charged the officers with a sword threatening to kill them, police shot him.

Rodriguez was taken to Regina Hospital and was then airlifted to Regions Hospital in St. Paul where he died.

The Hastings police officer who shot the man is Sgt. James Galland, who has been with the department since 1991. The other authorities involved in the shooting are Hastings police officer Mike Schmitz, Hastings police officer Bryan Schowalter and Dakota County Sheriff's deputy Matt Schepers.

All have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.
