USDA Temporarily Shuts Down Swift Kill Floor

WORTHINGTON, Minn. (AP) ―

Hundreds of hogs waited in the heat while the kill floor at JBS Swift & Co. in Worthington was temporarily shut down.

A representative from the U.S. Department of Agriculture says that Swift was shut down for about 14 hours. The representative tells the Daily Globe that the USDA suspended its inspection services at the plant because of a humane handling violation.

The USDA reinstated its inspection services at the plant at 2:40 p.m. Wednesday.

Truckers were angry and frustrated about their shipments of hogs having to wait in the 90-degree heat. Several Swift employees drove around with a water tank, using a hose to spray water on the hogs to try to keep them cool.

Swift officials declined to comment to the newspaper.
