A Winona County sheriff's deputy briefly lost his suspect after a high speed chase, but found him again by looking up into a tree.
Winona County Chief Deputy Sheriff Ron Ganrude said the 27-year-old man is in the Winona County Jail on Monday awaiting formal charges.
Documents say the chase started about 1:45 a.m. Saturday on U.S. Highway 14 near Stockton when a westbound vehicle crossed the centerline as the deputy approached.
The deputy turned around to pull over the car, but it fled. The pursuit reached speeds up to 100 mph before the deputy lost the vehicle on a gravel road.
The deputy backtracked and found the car abandoned in a ditch. The deputy called in a tracking dog and some backup. They tracked the suspect to a tree about 3 a.m.
The suspect is facing possible charges of fleeing a police officer, obstructing the legal process, refusing to take a sobriety test and driving while intoxicated.
