A couple who have collected guns for the past 20 years arrived home to find their garage in this southern Minnesota town ransacked -- and about 35 guns missing.
Three juveniles and one adult were arrested. The adult, Cody Michael Roberts, of Wells, was charged with felony burglary and theft and was being held Wednesday in the Faribault County jail on $70,000 bond. Two of the juveniles were also charged in the case, and charges were pending against the third.
Shirley Johnson arrived home early Saturday to find that her garage door wouldn't open and none of the house lights would turn on.
"I was shocked and scared," said Johnson, whose stolen guns were valued at $30,000.
Johnson and her husband Danny have about 100 guns, including Colt handguns, rifles and some that had never been fired.
The Johnsons had their guns locked and under surveillance, but the videos were trashed.
"It's a pretty upsetting deal," Danny Johnson said. "A guy works half his life to get something and all of a sudden it's gone."
His wife said she's glad her 14-year-old and 8-year-old weren't home during the burglary.
"You think you're safe in your little town," she said. "It was a shock."
In response to the burglary, authorities sent crime alerts to area pawn shops and gun collectors. Wells Police Chief Rick Herman said the Faribault County Sheriff's Department helped arrest the suspects early Sunday.
The Johnsons will get most of their guns back after police are done with them, though Shirley said many of them were damaged in the incident.
