Officials have broken ground on a new $1.65 billion steel plant in northern Minnesota.
Gov. Tim Pawlenty joined officials from India's Essar Steel Holdings Ltd. at a ceremony Friday in Nashwauk.
According to the governor's office, the facility will be the first mine-to-steelmaking plant in North America.
Essar Steel says about 2,000 construction jobs and 700 permanent jobs will come with the new plant, which will include a new iron ore pellet plant, a direct-reduced iron facility and steel mill. Up to 2.5 million tons of steel products are expected to come out of the plant each year.
The state of Minnesota is providing $71.9 million in bonds and other funds to support infrastructure development for the plant.
