Doctors Unsure What Caused Woman's Staph Infection

(WCCO) She came down with symptoms that sounded like H1N1 flu – a fever and body aches. But it turned out, the local daycare worker was sick with a bacterial infection. Doctors diagnosed Mari Ansari with a staph infection. She's been hospitalized for 10 days now, but started showing signs of improvement today.

"It's hard to see her like this," said Ansari's sister Carol Kulzer.

She, and all of Ansari's family, can't imagine the kind of bug that could hit a vibrant, healthy woman so hard.

"The infection got into everything," said Ansari's ex-husband Hussein. "It got into her brain. She had a couple strokes."

Hussein Ansari said his ex-wife felt bad a couple weeks ago while she was at the daycare where she works.

"She's a health lady, she works hard," he said.

When doctors first saw Mari they thought she had a urinary tract infection. But then it got worse. She was diagnosed with a staphylococcus infection. Doctors say she did not get it at the hospital and any connection to H1N1 has been ruled out.

"They ruled that out," he said. "But what caused it, I still don't know."

Mari's children and friends say she is usually the one who takes care of others. It's hard to see her in the hospital.

"She loves kids," Ansari said. "She's everybody's mom."

Luckily, Mari's staph infection can be treated with antibiotics. But it may take some time for her to fully recover.

"It's a long journey," said Kulzer, "baby steps."

One other reason Mari was reluctant to go to the doctor is because she does not have health insurance. Family and friends are going to hold a benefit to help her at her son's restaurant.

The benefit, where all proceeds go to help Mari with her medical expenses,
begins at 7 p.m. at Ansari's Mediterranean Grill & Lounge, 1960 Rahncliff Ct. in Eagan.
