Authorities say two teenagers are in custody after a nearly three-hour standoff in East Grand Forks, Minn.
Steven Scott Svir, 18, of Arvilla, is charged with second degree burglary. His bail was set Friday at $100,000. Dillion Patrick Davis, 18, of East Grand Forks, was arrested later on a similar charge, police said.
Police Chief Mike Hedlund said the incident started Thursday afternoon, after police got a report of two suspicious people approaching the front door of a home. A neighbor reported that one went inside and the other one left.
Officers searched the main floor and found no one. But they saw weapons in the basement and heard what sounded like someone moving around so they backed off, thinking the intruder might be armed.
A nearby day care center was locked down.
Late in the afternoon, the Grand Forks SWAT team entered the home and arrested Svir. Authorities said he was found hiding in the basement.
"I came home from school, and I saw two cops standing in my house," Julie Gregerson said. "I almost walked in, and I would have walked in with this person in my house."
Gregerson said her husband had a collection of about 30 firearms, including handguns, shotguns, rifles and ammunition. Their basement flooded, and the weapons were out in the open because her husband, a hunter and a competitive shooter, was trying to dry them out, she said.
Gregerson stood on the edge of a perimeter set up by police late Thursday afternoon, nervously waiting for the situation to be resolved.
"I don't even smoke, but I went and bought a pack," she said.
