Authorities are searching for a University of St. Thomas freshman who was reported missing early Sunday.
According to St. Thomas authorities, 18-year-old Dan Zamlen, of Eveleth, Minn., was last heard from at about 3 a.m. He was talking with a friend over cell phone when the line went dead.
"The last part of the phone conversation was just like ... getting further and further away. Either he was getting away from the phone or the phone was getting away further away from him. And then it was eventually very quiet," said Anna Chappuis, who said she was the last person to talk to Zamlen on the phone.
"Then the conversation just took a bad turn and there was like 'Help' and 'Oh my God,'" said Chappuis.
Zamlen's roommate, Tim Gleason, said he last saw him leaving their Brady Hall dorm room just after midnight.
"I woke up at 3:00 this morning with public safety knocking on my door saying 'Dan is missing. Have you seen him?' Nothing, so my parents are on their way up right now. So it's not good right now," said Gleason.
It's believed he was near the Mississippi River near St. Clair Avenue in St. Paul at the time. Friends and family are walking along Mississippi Boulevard handing out pictures of Zamlen, hoping they can find him.
"If we find him just curled up in a little ball somewhere just sleeping it off at a friend's house that is what we are hoping for. You obviously go to the worse place in your mind but we're really trying hard not to because it's my little brother," said Andrea Zamlen, Dan's sister.
St. Thomas spokesperson Jim Winterer described Zamlen as 6-foot tall weighing 175 pounds. He was last seen wearing a blue jacket and jeans.
Winterer said there is concern Zamlen may be in need of medical attention as a Type 1 diabetic.
A helicopter was used Sunday to search the river, but nothing was found.
Students and faculty at St. Thomas were alerted to Zamlen's disappearance via a text messaging service.
Family members drove down from the Iron Range on Sunday morning after getting a call about the situation. Signs have been posted in the area and the St. Paul Fire Department sent rescue officials to help search the riverbanks.
Friends told police they believe Zamlen left the party and was walking to the University of Minnesota to meet other friends when he went missing.
Anyone with information about Zamlen is asked to contact the school's public safety department at 651-962-5555.
