St. Paul Public Schools Pick New Superintendent

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ― A St. Paul Public Schools employee for more than 20 years will be the district's next Superintendent.

Forty-eight-year-old Valeria Silva is St. Paul's Chief Academic Officer. She was also the Director of English Language Learner Programs, Principal at Adams Spanish Immersion School, Assistant Principal at Dayton's Bluff Elementary, Coordinator of Spanish Immersion Program/Curriculum and a Specialist for Standards and Accommodations in the Minnesota Department of Education

Silva moved to Minnesota from Chile when she was 24 years old. Her two children graduated from Johnson High School last year.

"I am truly humbled and honored with this responsibility I've been entrusted with," said Ms. Silva. "I want to thank the board for maintaining a transparent process and selecting so many qualified candidates. I'm ready to get to work with our students, teachers, staff, families and community members to accelerate our important work. Together, we can continue making Saint Paul Public schools a truly excellent place for our students to learn and succeed."

All seven school board members voted in favor of picking Silva Monday night. There were two other finalists. The School Board Chair said Silva is a visionary leader who cares about closing the achievement gap.
