A 49-year-old man has been arrested in the shooting of a 14-year-old boy from West St. Paul late Saturday evening at East Belvidere Street and Oakland Avenue.

A 49-year-old man was arrested in the shooting of a 14-year-old boy from West St. Paul late Saturday evening.
According to police, paramedics responded to a call at East Belvidere Street and Oakland Avenue at about 9 p.m.
He was taken to Regions Hospital and remains there Sunday morning. He was listed in critical but stable condition. The boy's cousin said he is expected to recover.
Early reports suggested the teenage boy had been hurt by a firework, but paramedics determined his injuries were due to a gunshot.
Police said investigations revealed that the victim had been in the area while fireworks were being ignited nearby. The victim was walking to a nearby home when he realized he was bleeding from his neck.
"All of a sudden there was a lull in the action and we turned and he was holding his throat and there was blood," said the boy's cousin D.J. Footh.
A neighbor who spent time in the military knew what to do and helped the boy until paramedics arrived.
"He jumped on him and ended up pinched his throat closed because it was a gunshot wound from the throat. Basically saved his life," said Footh.
Cary Schmidt was arrested at his home about a half hour after the shooting. However, he was released Monday without charges.
