St. Cloud officials are predicting a summer of bad traffic with the Highway 23 DeSoto Bridge out of commission.
Mayor Dave Kleis says the city is asking the state Department of Transportation to route all truck traffic around the city -- even if their stop is in the city. At a community meeting last night about the bridge, there were numerous complaints about trucks disrupting the main detour.
MnDOT closed the bridge in March after an inspection found bent gusset plates. The bridge will be demolished this summer and replaced next summer, and should reopen in November 2009.
City and MnDOT officials say they are looking at a variety of ways to help traffic flow better in the detour.
Business owners are concerned about the effects of the detour. The owner of Val's Rapid Serv estimates he's losing 10 to 15 percent of customers during the lunch hour.
