Gov. Raises Special Session Possibility On Budget

ST. PAUL (AP) ― While noting the positive direction of state budget talks, Governor Tim Pawlenty says he's considering dates for a special session if a deal can't be reached.

Pawlenty and top lawmakers have been meeting off-and-on for weeks trying to reach agreement on how to close a $935 million budget deficit.

The Republican governor says he is mulling fallback plans.

One is calling a special session. Another would be to use his executive powers to fix the budget himself. He wouldn't say which option he prefers because he wants to keep the focus on striking a negotiated deal.

Outstanding issues are specific spending cuts to make, the amount to draw from reserves and how to structure a limit on property tax increases by local governments.
