Special Delivery From Minn. To Red Bulls In Iraq

BASRA, Iraq (WCCO) ― WCCO-TV Don Shelby and photojournalist Tom Aviles are reporting from Iraq this week, embedded with the 34th Infantry Division National Guard headquartered in Minnesota, also known as the Red Bulls. But Shelby had one other duty to perform while he was there.

Before Shelby and Aviles left for Iraq, they spent time with another noble National Guard outfit with long experience in Iraq and Afghanistan, the 133rd Wing of the Minnesota Air Guard.

Shelby and Aviles were given a shakedown flight on the venerable winged warhorse, the C-130.

At the conclusion, the officers of the 133rd asked Shelby and Aviles if they would do them a favor when they get to Iraq, so they complied and completed their assignment.

"On behalf of the 133rd Air Wing of the Minnesota National Guard, they would be very pleased if you could fly their flag, the American flag that's flown over headquarters for the 133rd, above [the Basra Base] in honor of your service and in honor of the individuals whose lives were lost in this fight in Basra. Would you accept this on behalf of the 133rd?" asked Shelby.

"Absolutely sir, we'd be honored," said Capt. John Donovan.

So, the American flag from the 133rd flew over the Red Bull headquarters in Basra, Iraq on Tuesday.
