Special Bike Helps Girl Just Be A Kid

(WCCO) A Minneapolis girl who has had so much taken away gets the gift of freedom in bike built especially for her.

Lainey Lee was born with a type of dwarfism, but thanks to the handy-work of one hospital she's been able to take part in family bike rides.

Lainey was born with Campomelic Dysplasia. Her rib cage is too small and her lungs can't grow like a normal kid. Ninety percent of babies born with it don't survive.

Lainey needs a respirator to help her breath and because of that mom and dad thought their days of biking were over.

Some guys at Gillette Children's Hospital knew better. It took just two days to transform a new industrial bike into one especially for Lainey.

The bike carries about 100 pounds of Lainey's stuff and the $1,300 price tag paid was paid for by family and friends.

Lainey's mother said it's hard not to feel upbeat when so many people have given so much to their daughter.

"The outpouring of support that we've had for Lainey, it's hard not feeling good about that," Heather Lee said.

Gillette Children's fabrication lab helps to make more than 1,000 wheelchairs every year, as well as special braces and prosthetic limbs for kids in need.
