Man Finds Bag Of $4K In Cash, Finds The Owner

SOUTH HAVEN, Minn. (WCCO) ― What would you do if you found $4,000 in a parking lot and you knew no one saw you pick it up? For a South Haven, Minn. man there was only one option -- call the police.

"I wouldn't have been able to sleep at night. I would have felt guilty," said Craig Robuck, a retired bail enforcement officer.

Robuck found the money, some checks and a few credit card receipts in a bank bag sitting in the snow outside the South Haven Municipal Liquor Store on the morning of Dec. 27.

His girlfriend, Bonnie Shadduck, manages the bar and Robuck was there to clean up cigarette butts and beer bottles.

"I just help her cleaning up after the riff-raff," he said.

At first, he though the bag was a pizza box. But when he got closer, he saw it said Kimball State Bank on the outside. Robuck had to peel it off the ground because it had melted into the snow.

"He came in, he was holding the bag with two hands and said, 'Look what I found.' I'm like, 'Open it, open it' and I opened it and was like, 'Oh my gosh,'" recalled Shadduck.

They called the Wright County Sheriff's Office who traced it to JB Off-sale Liquor in nearby Kimball. The deputies returned the money to JB owner John Bolvin.

"I'm very glad there are some honest people still out there in the world," Bolvin said.

He said he missed the bank before closing on Friday and left the bag in a friend's car. Bolvin said he must have mistakenly kicked it outside when he left the bar. He was gave Robuck a $50 reward.

"Some have called me idiots and some say they like to see an honest guy around town," Robuck laughed. "It's 50/50."
