St. Paul police say a man charged with shooting a 14-year-old boy on Fourth of July night has been arrested near New Orleans.
Cary Francis Schmidt had been freed Monday after a judge rejected the initial charges. The 49-year-old was charged again Friday with one count of second-degree assault, but had left town.
Police spokesman Paul Schnell says Schmidt was found Friday night at a residence in St. Tammany Parish, La., where he was apparently visiting friends and relatives, and arrested without incident. He was in custody Saturday and awaiting extradition.
Police have said Schmidt might have been fed up with fireworks going off. The victim, Gunnar Footh, has been released from the hospital. It's unclear if he was the intended target.

Witnesses said after the shooting, a man who'd been in the military and knew first aid helped Gunnar until paramedics arrived.
