Devastating Fire Hits Northern Minn. Farm

VERNDALE, Minn. (WCCO) ― A Northern Minnesota family is facing a several million-dollar loss after their farm of 28 years went up in flames.

For 10 hours on Friday, firefighters battled the flames at the Schoon dairy farm in Verndale. Investigators are looking into the cause of the fire.

The Schoons lost 40 cows worth about $35,000 each, as well as several barns.

"Go to bed, an hour later, your life's changed forever," said David Schoon.

Low milk prices have already hit the family hard, so recovering from this latest setback could prove extremely difficult.

"We were already running with a small crew and cutting corners where we needed to and we thought that was the disaster," said Harvey Schoon.

The Schoons have some insurance, but they don't think it'll cover everything. They were able to save more than 100 Holsteins, but they don't know if they will be able to rebuild.

A fund has been set up for them at TCF Bank. It's under the name "Schoon Farms Benefit."
