MN School District Missing Money, Theft Suspected

TWIN VALLEY, Minn. (AP) ― There's money missing from the Norman County East School District in northwestern Minnesota, and theft is suspected.

The Twin Valley Police Department is investigating. Police Chief Jason Douville says the probe centers on a district employee who recently resigned.

Superintendent Dean Krogstad says the district doesn't know how much money is missing, and he won't speculate.

The issue of the missing money became public on Monday, when the board met to approve about $222,000 in budget cuts.

The district has about 360 students and serves the communities of Twin Valley and Gary. It's facing declining enrollment and rising operating costs.

A 2007 financial audit of the district found lax controls of the district's finances, particularly with the cash generated by athletic events.

Krogstad says the audit helped spot financial inconsistencies a month ago. He notified police March 24.
