9 Students Hurt In School Bus Accident

CHETEK, Wis. (WCCO) ― Nine children were injured after a school bus went into a ditch and tipped onto its side in western Wisconsin Monday morning.

The accident happened just before 7:30 a.m. on 26th Street just north of 11th Avenue in Chetek, Wis., which is southeast of Rice Lake, Wis.

Of the 17 children on the bus at the time of the accident, nine had minor injuries. Four were taken to local hospitals by ambulance and five were taken to local hospitals by car, the Barron County Sheriff's Department said.

The children ranged in age from elementary to high school.

The bus, driven by Leonard Helms, 34, traveled into the ditch of a dirt road and then tipped onto its side, the sheriff's department said. The bus driver was not injured.
