In just one day, a local woman lost her whole family.
Police say James Holland, 45, and his son, Jude Holland, 4, of Chanhassen died at the scene of a collision in Washington County. The driver of the other vehicle, Eric Sprouse, 18, of Wyoming, also died from injuries in the crash. It happened on Sunday morning on Interstate 35 just north of Highway 8 in Forest Lake.
Family of the Hollands said the two were on their way back from visiting friends in Lake Vermillion when the crash happened.
For some reason, the maroon Chevy Silverado going northbound crossed the median on I-35. The truck crashed head-on with a Toyota Camry headed southbound, killing both people in the car. The two men in the pick-up were not wearing seat belts.
Sprouse, the driver, ended up on the freeway critically injured. Police said he died Monday. His passenger, Dustin Covey, 20, of Wyoming, was hurt as well, but is at home recuperating.
The state patrol said both of the Hollands were properly restrained. Police said they don't believe alcohol played a role in the crash, but continue investigating.
The stretch of I-35 north of Highway 8 was closed for several hours as investigators collected evidence. At this point, the state patrol can't pinpoint a cause, but it appears the deadly collision could've been avoided.
