Man, Child Killed In I-35 Head-On Crash

FOREST LAKE, Minn. (WCCO) ― Minnesota State Patrol investigators are trying to figure out what caused a crash Sunday that killed two people. A man and a child died at the scene of the collision in Washington County. It happened on Interstate 35 just north of Highway 8 in Forest Lake.

For some reason, the maroon Chevy Silverado going northbound crossed the median on I-35. The truck crashed head-on with a Toyota Camry headed southbound, killing both people in the car. The two men in the pick-up were not wearing seat belts. The driver ended up on the freeway critically injured. His passenger was hurt as well, but will be OK.

"The guy that flew out of the car was like, 'My head, my head, what happened? Someone talk to me.' He was freaking out," said Kelly Dixon, who was driving on a frontage road near the freeway when the crash happened.

The man and boy in the car struck by the pick-up died at the scene. The state patrol said they were both properly restrained.

"When they came together in the southbound lane, it was an incredibly violent, which is what resulted in those two fatalities," said Capt. Matt Langer of the Minnesota State Patrol.

The stretch of I-35 north of Highway 8 was closed for several hours as investigators collected evidence. At this point, the state patrol can't pinpoint a cause, but it appears the deadly collision could've been avoided.

"This case is about paying attention. We need to figure out why that vehicle came through the median," Langer said. "It's a perfect, sunny day, light winds, no weather conditions, normal traffic and two people are killed as a result of someone not paying attention and not driving safely."

The names of the people who died have not been released by authorities yet.

The state patrol said the 1999 Chevy Silverado entered northbound I-35 at County Road 2 from Forest Lake. That's about a mile south of the accident.

Witnesses to the crash around 11 a.m. Sunday morning are asked to contact the state patrol.
