Rockville Will Soon Be About 17 Percent Smaller

ROCKVILLE, Minn. (AP) ― Rockville will soon be about 17 percent smaller.

An administrative law judge ruled Thursday that 84 property owners can take their 3,840 acres of land and join Maine Prairie Township.

The property used to be part of Rockville Township. Residents say the mostly rural area was well-served under township government and there is no reason for them to pay taxes for city services.

The ruling means the city will lose 188 residents or 4.5 percent of the population, 6 percent of its tax base and 15 percent of its road miles.

Maine Prairie Township supported the residents while the city of Rockville opposed it.

The decision is effective Wednesday. The city has the right to appeal within 30 days.
