Fire Extinguished At Recycling Plant In St. Paul

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ― A fire that started at the Rock-Tenn Recycling Plant in St. Paul Thursday afternoon is now extinguished, according to plant officials.

St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard said a two alarm fire started at about 4:00 p.m. at one of the largest paper recycling plant in the Upper Midwest.

The Rock-Tenn recycles paper into packaging products, bleached and 100 percent recycled paperboard and merchandising displays.

According to Zaccard, St. Paul deployed 25 fire crews, with about 50 people working to bring the flames under control.

According to Rock-Tenn officials, the fire was confined to the boxboard dry-end area of the 42-acre facility, and fire crews were able to extinguish the fire within two hours.

Officials said about 20 workers were in the area when the fire started, and all employees were evacuated and accounted for. No injuries were reported.

At the time of the fire, Zaccard said lots of steam, which resembled smoke, was rising from the plant.

Plant officials said the cause of the blaze is unknown. A plant spokesperson said there was very little property damage to the facility, and the plant will be open on Friday.

The Rock-Tenn mill is the state's largest recycling facility, turning about 1,000 tons of paper per day. The plant employs approximately 500 people, and is located near Interstate 94 and Highway 280 in St. Paul.
