Rochester Cops To Pass Out Souvenir Coins

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) ― Helping a police officer in Rochester could earn you some coin.

Officers have started carrying souvenir coins that symbolize the importance of cooperation between law enforcement and the public.

The token is nearly 2 inches across and features Rochester's municipal logo on one side. The other is inscribed with thanks for advancing the community's quality of life.

Officers can pass out the coins as they see fit. For example, it could go to someone who helps direct traffic at an accident scene, or provides a tip in a criminal investigation.

This kind of a community policing program has been used elsewhere in the country for years.

Officer Jim Benson researched the program in some East Coast communities, and is being credited for bringing the new program to Rochester.
