Roads Bill Pads Minnesota State Patrol Ranks

ST. PAUL (AP) ― Roads, bridges and rail construction aren't the only areas that would get beefed up by a mega-transportation spending bill. The head count at the Minnesota State Patrol would rise too.

The $7.8 billion plan for a decade of new transportation spending calls for the hiring of 40 more state troopers. It would bring Minnesota's highway patrol complement to just under 600.

The Senate bill's Democratic sponsor, Steve Murphy of Red Wing, says the extra troopers are sorely needed. He says Minnesota has among the smallest forces compared with its number of road miles and licensed drivers.

The transportation plan is headed for final votes in the House and Senate on Thursday. It faces an almost certain veto from Governor Tim Pawlenty. But that would be followed by a legislative override attempt.
