When the Republicans come to town in two weeks, the cities of St. Paul and Minneapolis want to make a great first impression. On Saturday morning, volunteers worked to clean up for the guests and hoped all their little tasks would pay off.
Kent Petterson decided to donate flowers and plants them in pots along West 7th. He's using the opportunity to encourage others to beautify their neighborhoods.
"It's just a great thing to be doing in a community and the Convention is a perfect excuse for doing it," he said.
The cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, along with convention organizers, put out the call for volunteers earlier this week. Saturday morning, dozens of teenagers from the St. Paul Youth Corps picked up several bags of trash.
"We take a lot of pride in St. Paul, period. And because this is such a national focus coming up here in a couple weeks, we want to show America that we have a beautiful city," said Tony Ruiz with St. Paul Parks And Recreation.
About 50 volunteers cleaned up parts of Minneapolis, too. They focused on Loring Park, Nicollet Mall and down by the river.
