St. Paul Police Chief John Harrington is acknowledging that innocent people were swept up by riot officers during last month's Republican National Convention.
Harrington's remarks are an early look at a formal report being prepared by his department.
More than 800 people were arrested during the convention, and riot officers used tear gas, pepper spray and percussion grenades. An independent commission is reviewing police planning and tactics.
Harrington says police tried hard to sort out innocent people and release them as soon as possible.
Harrington also says the police internal affairs unit will look into individual allegations of police misconduct even if it doesn't get a formal complaint.
Harrington says more than 100 officers had urine or feces thrown on them. He also says some $69,000 in property damage was done by anarchists or protesters, and that figure could go up.
