A wildlife area is being preserved about 12 miles southwest of Rochester after a conservationist donated the land.
Retired orthodontist Donald Nelson gave nearly 500 acres along the South Fork of the Zumbro River near Rock Dell in Olmsted County.
Nelson had maintained natural grasslands and planted trees on the land over a period of almost 40 years.
Nelson says he can't bear to think about losing the land to development, which is why he gave it to the Trust for Public Land, a national nonprofit organization. The group then sold the land to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources for half its market value.
The DNR plans to bury an old granary, hog building and shed that are currently on the land. The area will soon be open to hunting, fishing, bird watching, mushroom hunting and berry picking.
