Area Near Republican Convention Zoned For Speech

ST. PAUL (AP) ― We'll bring the stage, you bring the show.

St. Paul officials are extending that offer to people who want to demonstrate outside the Republican National Convention that will be held at the downtown Xcel Energy Center. They're marking off at least 180,000 square feet of space across the street from the arena and providing a stage and sound system.

People can apply for a 50-minute block of time between 8 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Sept. 1-4. A lottery will be held to determine who gets what slot. Applications for stage time are due by August 11.

Assistant St. Paul Police Chief Matt Bostrom says he's expecting some people to use their time for skits and others for speeches. He says people will be able to stay in the surrounding viewing area for as long as they wish.

According to GOP.com, the Republican Party was born in the early 1850's by anti-slavery activists and individuals who believed that government should grant western lands to settlers free of charge. In 1860, Abraham Lincoln was elected as the first Republican Party president.
